Annual Meeting 2022

The Annual Meeting of the Fellows and Griswold Lecture will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

You’ve Got A Friend: Over the past century, we have seen a surge in the number of amicus briefs filed in courts around the country. This trend is evident in recent tax litigation, with the College appearing as amici in Boyd, Buck, CIC Services, Taylor Lohmeyer, Kaestner Family Trust, VAS Holdings, and other cases. See https://www.actconline.org/amicus-curiae-briefs/.

With the increased interest in engaging in legal debates comes difficult questions. For example, when should the courts allow amicus briefs? Who should be drafting amicus briefs and what should they bring to the conversation? When should a request to file an amicus brief be denied?

To discuss these issues and share their experience and insight into the friend of the court brief, the College welcomes Judge Michael Y. Scudder, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and Judge Daniel Bress, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, to a virtual fireside chat on Thursday, February 17, 2022, starting at 6:00 pm Eastern, immediately following the Annual Meeting. If you have ever sought the assistance of amici on behalf of a client, been asked to prepare an amicus brief, or just wondered how this process works, this is a “must attend” event!.
